(As of September 29, 1999)

The World Cup Meet, scheduled for the new University of Maryland Aquatic Center, is now less than 8 weeks away. The 2-day, short course meters meet will be held on November 17 and 18. You can expect to see short course meters world records to fall at this meet; so it will be very fast swimming!!! Each day Prelims will begin at 10 AM and finals at 6:30 PM. How Can You Get Tickets???
The UMD Aquatic Center has seating for approximately 800 spectators and we hope to fill every one of those seats. Ticket prices are $5 for prelimes ($3 under 12) and $8 for finals ($5 under 12). You have 2 options for obtaining tickets for this fastest ever swim meet in Metropolitan Washington area: First, you may order them by calling Meadowbrook Aquatic Center at (410) 433-8300. Secondly, you can check with your PVS swim club because several clubs have indicated that they will arrange for tickets for their club members. We strongly recommend that you make your plans quickly because ticket sales have been brisk, according to Murray Stephens, Meet Director and head coach of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. When you think about it, this will be like being at the 2000 Olympics swimming venue; the course will be a little different but many of the World's Elite Swimmers will be competing.

Is There Another Way to See the Meet???
Absolutely!!! PVS needs to fill nearly 100 volunteer positions. These include hospitality, registration support, doping control (must be over 21), media relations (there will be print media from around the world and the event is being televised), spectator marshalls, drivers, among others. Volunteers will get into the venue free for the sessions they work and most positions will allow for plenty of viewing from pool side. We require the following number of volunteers by session:

Session Prelims Between Sessions Finals
Nov 16th (Registration) 2 2
Nov 17th 15 2 20
Nov 18th 13 2 20
In addition, we need 17 drivers primarily to transport athletes principally to and from airports and hotels; we need 3 on the 15th, 10 on the 16th and 4 on the 19th. Drivers and volunteers on the 16th will also get in free for at least one session of the meet. We need your volunteerism to shine through; please feel free to volunteer for several sessions.

How Do I Volunteer???
It couldn't be any simpler! Just click on this volunteer link, which will open an email window for you. Provide your name (and names of other family members who wish to volunteer), phone number (specify day or night), email address, PVS Club Affiliation (if any - no requirement) and the session(s) you would like to work. Indicate if you are willing to be a driver along with the days and times. Volunteering will be on a first come first assign basis. We will not be assigning positions to volunteers until late October but we will acknowledge receipt of your response and notify you of the sessions you will be working within a few days of your response. You may list a preference but unless you tell us that you WILL NOT work a particular function, we will make assignments based on our needs.

Are there Any Requirements of Volunteers???
Other than showing up for your work assignment the only other requirement will be attendance at an orientation meeting for volunteers at the U of Maryland Aquatic Center on Saturday, Nov 6. Time will be announced. This meeting will be brief; it should not interfere with your busy schedules. But it is important because specific functions and responsibilities, attire, and privileges will be briefed.
