INFORMATION ABOUT
WORLD CUP 1999

As previously announced in the Potomac Valley Voices, the US site for the 1999-2000 season World Cup Meet will be the new University of Maryland Aquatic Center on the UMD College Park Campus. This 2 day event will be held on Nov 17 - 18, 1999; there will be a preliminary and finals session each day. Many of the World's and US' elite swimmers will participate in this short course meters event, as they prepare for the 2000 Olympics. The meet is hosted by USA Swimming and FINA, the international governing body for the sport, in conjunction with the Baltimore Washington 2012 Regional Coalition, the body that has been put together to lure the 2012 Summer Olympic Games to this area.

The World Cup is an annual series of 12 swim meets held in various countries around the World. This coming season will also see swimmers competing head-to-head in Canada, Brazil, Hong Kong, Australia and five countries in Europe, in addition to our own University of Maryland. The University of Maryland will also be the site for the 2000 USA meet.

Ticket information will be made available shortly on this webpage. Please stay tuned for that. You will not want to miss seeing some, if not all, of this meet; it will be a great visible display of what our young competitors are striving to achieve.

Potomac Valley, along with the Maryland LSC, is committed to providing all the volunteers needed to support this exciting event. This will require approximately 100 people to assist with registration, hospitality, doping control, media support, ground transportation and just general support. This will be a great way to see at least a portion of these world class swims free, as volunteers will not require a ticket. More information on how to volunteer and specific volunteer requirements will also be posted here at a later date but it is not too early to circle the dates of the meet and plan to spend those times with us - working a little - and seeing Olympic-like competition in a venue - short course meters - we do not get to see around here in a USA Swimming competition.

Information on how to volunteer to officiate at this meet is already available on the USA Swimming website. For officials holding a National Certification, a form to apply is downloadable from this site
